Jayasri Burman’s paintings have a dream-like and lyrical quality in the way she narrates her stories in water colour, pen and ink. Indian folk tales, her closeness to nature as well as her concern for women is very evident in her work. She manages successfully to weave elements of folk idiom into the intricate patterns of her painting, portray women sometimes as a ceremonial bird or a mother Goddess, her canvas usually surrounded by lush green environs, flora and fauna.
