K. G. Subramanyan was a master of exploring different mediums be it oils and acrylics on canvas, reverse paintings on acrylic, gouache, water colour, murals and sculpture. The artist gave the human figure a new dimension. Drawing upon the rich resources of myth, folklore, memory and tradition, Subramanyan tempered romanticism with wit and eroticism. He would often depict Indian mythology and contemporary culture, drawing from Indian and foreign references such as African masks, Picasso’s cubism, Tanjore paintings, bazaar scenes and others to break boundaries between global cultures and geographical confines.
