Jamini Roy is considered the first modernist master of Indian art and is best known for combining traditional and Western art styles to create unique and complex works of his own. The Santhal tribal people were an important subject for him and his paintings combined the minimal brush stroke of the Kalighat style with elements of tribal art from Bengal. He is also well known for his landscapes, mother and child, Radha and figures of Christ. His paintings were usual in simple two dimensional in form, with flat colours and an emphasis on strong bold lines.
